Nibelungen

		Hainburg Hainburg is in Lower Austria, on the Slovakian border between Vienna and Bratislava. Around 6,000 people live in this town on the Danube. "They stayed the night in old Hainburg", so it says in the Nibelungenlied. The "old" probably refers to the nearby ruins of the Roman town Carnuntum. Hainburg's old town centre is full of historic architecture from various periods. The towers and town gates are particularly striking. The Babenbergs, predecessors of the Habsburgs, were the ruling dynasty when the castle was built in 1050. Today, there is an annual festival in the castle - the "Burgspiele Hainburg". The flood plains near Hainburg are part of the "Danube-Auen" national park. The formerly isolated location near the border contributed to the remarkable diversity of species of Flora and Fauna in this area. More information on Hainburg
