EnnsEnns is the oldest town in Austria. The area around Enns was first populated about 4000 years ago. Celts and Romans followed. The name Enns derives from the latinised celtish word "anisius", meaning a fast-flowing swampland or mountain river. The St Laurence Basilica dates from the 4th century. Inside the basilica are the only visible excavations of Lauriacum, a Roman military camp. It was in Lauriacum that St Florian was executed on 4th May 304. The old town, the castle and the 60m high freestanding 16th century town tower in the main square were built between the middle ages and the baroque period. The town lies on the Upper Austrian side of the river bearing the same name, which forms the boundary between the states of Upper and Lower Austria. Today, there are around 11,000 inhabitants. According to the Nibelungenlied, the Burgundians passed through Enns on their way to Etzel. More information on Enns |
